Signing day for college football has come and gone, though Ohio State wasn’t number one this time (Alabama for the 4th year in a row) they did finish number 6, and as one person put it “I’m sure Urb got who he wanted”.
Urban Meyer once again has a more than solid recruiting class, receiving 27 signees. NCAA rules say a college can only have 25 but Meyer insist the number will lower to the required amount.
If I was writing this a week ago, I would say the star recruit was Joey Burrow, QB out of Athens Ohio who threw over 60 touchdowns and just three interceptions. The two time Gatorade Ohio Player of the year is a traditional quarterback who plays within the pocket. He looks to be in line to eventually start for OSU. I just hope the four start QB doesn’t become another Justin Zwick.
My top pick however is Mike Weber, who de-committed from the University of Michigan and decided on the last day to attend OSU. Meyer credited the choice by Weber to current running back Ezekiel Elliott who was in contact with the Detroit native via phone.
“He’s a guy that became very very close to Ezekiel Elliott,” Meyer told the Big Ten Network. He said “the relationship with the players was the difference”. Bu of course, OSU winning the championship. Weber is the eventual replacement for Elliott who will likely leave for the NFL after next season.
There are definitely some notables like Justin Hilliard, linebacker and Torrance Gibson, recruited as an athlete but he insist he is here to play quarterback despite the apparent logjam.
“There’s a chance two of our guys will be gone next year,” Meyer said referring to Braxton Miller and Cardale Jones.
And if you think any of this star recruits are planning on redshirting, Meyer says no.
Meyer tells the recruits, “If you want to redshirt, go somewhere else”, according to the Big Ten Network.
Yes, there is no doubt, the future is bright in Columbus.
